Warner & Kaine Applaud Over $1.42 Million in Federal Funding for Economic Development Projects in Appalachian Region of Virginia

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senators Mark R. Warner and Tim Kaine applauded $1,422,570 in federal funding from the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) for economic development projects in Wise County, Radford, and Roanoke. The funding will go toward three projects improving quality of life and promoting economic growth in the region.

“We’re proud to support these investments to help small businesses, attract tourists, and ensure access to clean drinking water in these communities,” said the Senators. “This funding will help Virginians get clean water and improve access to walkable outdoor spaces.”

The funding is distributed as follows:

  1. $700,000 to Radford for the East Main River and Rail Downtown Connector Trail, which will revitalize the East Main commercial area and construct a trail between Radford’s commercial district and the New River recreation area.
  2. $473,170 to Wise County for the Bear Creek Water Project, which will provide public water service to 11 households currently relying on contaminated private wells.
  3. $249,400 to Roanoke for Center in the Square’s Virtual Get Schooled Field Trip Program, a program that brings together local nonprofits and businesses to offer engaging virtual field trips showcasing the Appalachian region.

Funding for the East Main River and Rail Downtown Connector Trail is expected to bring 500 new visitors to town each year. ARC’s new investment in the Virtual Get Schooled Field Trip Program is expected to serve 25,000 participants and feature 25 local organizations.

ARC is an economic development agency of the federal government and 13 state governments, including Virginia, with a mission to build community capacity, strengthen economic growth, and bring the Appalachian region into socioeconomic parity with the nation. Funding for the Bear Creek Water Project is awarded through ARC’s Central Appalachian Distressed County Infrastructure (CADCI) grant program, which provides grants to counties facing barriers to economic progress.

Warner and Kaine have been strong advocates for a fully funded ARC that can increase employment and economic opportunities for those living in Appalachia.
