WASHINGTON – Today, Sens. Mark R. Warner and Tim Kaine (both D-VA) announced that the City of Norfolk and Norfolk Public Schools will receive a $22,948,800 grant from the U.S. Department of Defense to pay for demolition and new construction of the Camp Allen Elementary School. The new school will serve 571 students in pre-K through fifth grade, and address capacity issues and the deteriorating facility of the current Camp Allen Elementary School.
Funding for this competitive grant is provided under the Department of Defense’s Public Schools on Military Installations Program. Camp Allen Elementary is located at Naval Support Activity Hampton Roads, which is home to the U.S. Fleet Forces Command, Joint Staff Hampton Roads, U.S. Marine Corps Forces Command, Naval Submarine Forces, Atlantic; and Naval Reserve Forces Command. The majority of students at the school are the children of military personnel.
“We are pleased to announce these funds will help offset the costs of demolishing and constructing a new elementary school in Norfolk,” said the Senators. “We are strongly committed to ensuring that military families have the support that they deserve, and that includes access to a first-class public education and educational facilities.”
DoD’s Office of Economic Adjustment (OEA), in making these funds available, is required to give priority consideration to those military installations with schools having the most serious capacity needs or facility condition deficiencies. The program requires that local districts provide 20 percent in matching funds to go towards the costs of construction.
