Virginia Receives $2.7 Million In Federal Grants To Protect Civil War Battlefields

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Tim Kaine announced that Virginia has been awarded nearly $2.7 million in federal grants to help protect and preserve Civil War battlefields across the state.

The grants were awarded by the National Park Services American Battlefield Protection Program, which Kaine led the bipartisan effort to reauthorize in 2014. The program leverages funds from states and landowners to preserve Civil War battlefields at risk of being lost to haphazard development. Kaine also fought to ensure full funding of the program through the Land and Water Conservation Fund in the Fiscal Year 2016 omnibus appropriations bill.

Virginia was awarded the most money for the most projects, which will be completed in partnership with the Civil War Trust and the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation.

State and local governments are eligible for Battlefield Land Acquisition Grants. Private nonprofit groups may apply with state or local government sponsors. The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation and the Virginia Department of Historic Resources are the state sponsors of these grants. Grants are awarded through a competitive process and require a dollar-for-dollar non-federal match.
