WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Chris Coons (D-Del.), and Tim Kaine (D-Va.), members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, today praised the Committee’s passage of S.Res. 330, which congratulates the Tunisian National Dialogue Quartet for winning the 2015 Nobel Peace Prize. The resolution commends the Quartet for forging peaceful political compromises and reaffirms the United States’ commitment to support Tunisia as it continues on the path to democracy, stability, and prosperity.
“The successful passage of this Resolution in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee underscores the critical role that civil society actors and organizations must play in any sustainable reform effort,” said Senator Cardin. “The U.S. will continue to support Tunisia’s democratic transition, economic stabilization, and security. Going forward, I encourage the Tunisia’s civil society organizations to continue working with Tunisia’s elected leadership and the Tunisian people to preserve national unity, remain committed to dialogue, and stay the course of inclusivity and fundamental freedoms.”
“I’m pleased the Senate Foreign Relations Committee passed our resolution commending the Tunisian National Dialogue Quartet for winning the 2015 Nobel Peace Prize,” said Senator Coons. “The Quartet’s role in mediating peaceful compromises to disagreements about Tunisia’s political future was instrumental in setting the country on a path to democracy, stability, and prosperity. Recent political conflicts and public protests demonstrate that Tunisia has not reached the end of that path. Now more than ever, I urge the Tunisian people to follow the example of the Quartet and make the tough compromises necessary for democracy to flourish. The United States will remain a close partner of the Tunisian people in these efforts.”
“The Tunisian National Dialogue Quartet represents what can be achieved when citizens, despite different political affiliations and diverse backgrounds, decide to work together in good faith to ensure a better future for their country,” said Senator Kaine. “The Quartet’s commitment to an inclusive, peaceful dialogue to reach difficult, political compromises resulted in an historic election and democratic transition. I look forward to supporting Tunisia as it continues the hard, yet necessary, work of building the strong democracy its people deserve.”
