WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA) released the following statement regarding President Donald Trump’s executive order to eliminate birthright citizenship:
“The constitutional basis for birthright citizenship is crystal clear. Donald Trump has no legal basis for unilaterally rewriting our Constitution to revoke this right and deny Americans’ citizenship. He should expect swift legal challenges to this order.”
Kaine—a vocal supporter of birthright citizenship—has given multiple speeches on the Senate floor to explain the history of the citizenship clause in the Fourteenth Amendment, which guarantees this right, and highlight the many ways the United States has benefited from immigration and birthright citizenship.
