Kaine Statement On The President's State Of The Union Address

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Tim Kaine released the following statement after President Obama delivered his final State of the Union Address:

“Tonight, President Obama reflected on the significant progress our country has made over the past seven years and challenged us to reach higher. After assuming office in the midst of a global fiscal collapse and two open-ended wars, President Obama has patiently worked to rebuild a more sustainable economy, inspire an innovative and cleaner energy future, advance the equality and health of all citizens and reinvigorate diplomacy as a major measure of American strength. Challenges remain, at home and abroad, but the American spirit is strong and it stands in stark contrast to the histrionic pessimism emanating from a few headline grabbing Presidential candidates.

“I appreciate President Obama’s renewed call for Congress to finally come together to recognize ISIL as our enemy and authorize the use of military force against the terrorist group, but I’m disappointed another State of the Union has gone by without action from our country’s elected leaders on this critical issue – one that has left our servicemembers deployed to fight over the past 17 months without the most important signal of support we can offer.

“I am also pleased the President touched on the issue of opioid abuse – a growing epidemic in Virginia and the reason I invited Don Flattery, a resident of Alexandria, to be my guest tonight. Don lost his son Kevin – a 26-year-old graduate of the University of Virginia – to an opioid overdose in 2014. Don is such a powerful advocate because his story shows us that this epidemic goes beyond shocking statistics; it’s impacting families from all walks of life and robbing us of young people like Kevin who have incredible potential. I’m hopeful Congress will soon take action to help stop the opioid addiction crisis by increasing access to the life-saving drug Naloxone, addressing the overprescription of opioids, ensuring those in need have affordable treatment options and improving prevention efforts in communities across the country."

WASHINGTON, D.C. – El Senador Tim Kaine hizo hoy las siguientes declaraciones después del último discurso del Estado de la Unión del Presidente Obama:

“Hoy, el Presidente Obama reflejó sobre el progreso real e histórico que nuestro país ha visto después de siete años y nos retó a alcanzar aún más alto. Cuando el Presidente Obama asumió su puesto, el país se encontraba en medio de una crisis económica mundial y dos guerras sin fin. Desde ese entonces, el Presidente Obama ha trabajado pacientemente a restaurar una economía sostenible, inspirar la creación de un futuro innovador de energía limpia, avanzar la igualdad y la salud de todos los ciudadanos y revitalizar la diplomacia como una medida de la fuerza de los Estados Unidos. Desafíos permanecen, tanto en el extranjero como en la patria, pero el espíritu estadounidense es fuerte y completamente distinto al pesimismo histriónico proveniente de algunos candidatos a la presidencia mediáticos.

“Aprecio que el Presidente Obama ha nuevamente pedido que el Congreso finalmente reconozca que ISIL (el Estado Islámico en inglés) es nuestro enemigo y autorice el uso de fuerza militar contra el grupo terrorista pero estoy decepcionado que ha pasado otro discurso del Estado de la Unión sin acción por parte de los líderes elegidos sobre este tema crítico – uno que ha mantenido nuestras tropas desplegadas por más de 17 meses sin la señal más importante que podemos ofrecer.

“Además aprecio que el Presidente tocó el tema del abuso de los opioides – una epidemia creciente en Virginia y la razón por la que invité a Don Flattery, un residente de Alexandria a ser mi invitado hoy. Don perdió su hijo Kevin – un graduado de la Universidad de Virginia de 26 años – a causa de una sobredosis de opioides en 2014. Don es una voz poderosa porque su historia nos demuestra que esta epidemia va más allá de las estadísticas chocantes; la epidemia impacta a todas las familias de todos los ámbitos de la vida y nos roba de jóvenes como Kevin que tienen un potencial increíble.
