Kaine Statement on Supreme Court Decision to Shield Presidents from Accountability for Criminal Behavior

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, U.S. Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA) released the following statement on the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Trump v. United States holding that a President is absolutely immune from criminal prosecution for exercise of “core constitutional powers,” presumptively immune from prosecution for other official acts, and not immune from prosecution for unofficial conduct.

“The principle that nobody is above the law has been at the core of our constitutional system of government since America’s founding and should be the guiding light of our justice system. I am shocked and disappointed that the Supreme Court has chosen to undercut that principle by putting Donald Trump and the American presidency above accountability. This decision jeopardizes American democracy and national security and severely damages the Supreme Court’s credibility.”
