WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Tim Kaine, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations and Armed Services Committees, released the following statement on President Trump’s announcement that he is firing Secretary of State Rex Tillerson:
“It’s deeply troubling that President Trump fired his Secretary of State at a moment when the country is grappling with grave foreign policy challenges. By dismissing our nation’s top diplomat, President Trump is sending a signal of weakness to the world as we face continued threats from Russia, an upcoming meeting with North Korea, an ongoing crisis in Syria, and the urgent need to fill key diplomatic posts.
“As I consider his nominees for any national security positions, I will carefully scrutinize whether they will reverse Trump’s dangerous pattern of creating chaos and instability that raises the risk of unnecessary war and continues to diminish U.S. leadership in the world.”
