WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Tim Kaine released the following statement today on the passing of Wyatt Tee Walker:
“I was deeply saddened when I heard that Reverend Wyatt Tee Walker, whom I have known and admired for many years, passed away today. A graduate of Virginia Union University, Reverend Walker was part of a long Virginia tradition of Baptists fighting for justice. As pastor of Gillfield Baptist Church and founder of the Petersburg Improvement Association, he was instrumental in advancing civil rights in the Commonwealth, and through his early leadership in the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and the International Freedom Mobilization, he successfully promoted equality across the nation and the world. I extend my condolences to his family, his parishioners, his students, and all those who joined him in his fight.”
