WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Tim Kaine released the following statement regarding his appointment for the 118th Congress as Chair of the Senate Armed Services Committee’s (SASC) Subcommittee on Seapower:
“In my new position as Chair of the Armed Services Subcommittee on Seapower, I’m eager to lead the charge to ensure our brave servicemembers have the resources they need to keep Americans safe, and continue working to support Virginia’s military community—a critical part of our economy. Virginia has always had an outsized role in our national security and maritime military capabilities, and I look forward to bringing the Commonwealth’s expertise to my new position. I’m going to make sure that our dedicated servicemembers, shipbuilders, and ship repair workers have a seat at the table in Washington.”
The SASC Subcommittee on Seapower’s responsibilities include Navy planning and operations policy and programs, Marine Corps planning and operations policy and programs, and oversight of Navy and Marine Corps budgets. In addition to his SASC subcommittee chairmanship, Kaine will also serve as a member of SASC’s Subcommittees on Personnel and Readiness and Management Support.
Kaine, the father of a Marine, has fought for Virginia communities on SASC since he was first sworn in to the Senate in 2013. On SASC, his priorities have included supporting military spouses, securing funding for shipbuilding and military construction projects in Virginia, and advocating for the block buy of aircraft carriers to ensure our flexible fleet is ready to defend the nation. In the 118th Congress, Kaine will work to build on each of those efforts, in addition to ensuring that servicemembers have improved access to mental health services.
