WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, U.S. Senator Tim Kaine announced that the Department of the Interior will fund projects from the Sandy supplemental relief bill to protect marshes, wetlands, and coastal communities in Virginia. These projects include $24.9 million toward the restoration of Dyke Marsh Wildlife Preserve in Alexandria, $553,425 toward oyster reef restoration in Chincoteague, and $3,130,000 to enhance the resiliency of Great Dismal Swamp.
“Chincoteague, Dyke Marsh, and the Great Dismal Swamp are natural treasures of Virginia," said Kaine. "In recent years, disasters like Sandy and crises like sequestration and the government shutdown have significantly impacted our ability to maintain the Commonwealth’s natural resources. I welcome this much-needed federal investment and will continue working to preserve the Commonwealth's beautiful waters and lands for future generations to enjoy.”
