Kaine Statement On Governor McDonnell's Announcement Regarding Restoration of Rights

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Tim Kaine released the following statement today on Governor of Virginia Bob McDonnell’s announcement regarding the restoration of voting rights to nonviolent felons who have completed their sentences. As governor, Kaine restored the rights of more than 4,400 Virginians and worked to increase the availability of applications and timeliness of his administration’s responses to restoration requests:

“I applaud Governor McDonnell for his work to expedite the process of restoring voting rights to Virginians who have paid their debt to society. Under governors of both parties, Virginia has made significant progress to restore the rights of thousands of Virginians who deserve the chance to fully participate in their civic duty as they reenter society. I have long supported overturning the law that automatically disenfranchises felons who have completed their terms, but this is a step in the right direction.”
