WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, U.S. Senator Tim Kaine, who serves on the Senate Foreign Relations and Armed Services Committees, released the following statement regarding the death of al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri, which was the result of an American counterterrorism operation in Kabul, Afghanistan:
“Today’s counterterrorism operation brought to justice Ayman al-Zawahiri, one of the individuals who was responsible for the horrific attacks on the American people on September 11, 2001. I’m grateful for the decisive actions taken by the Biden Administration, our military, and intelligence community to hold al-Zawahiri accountable and keep Americans safe. We need to keep working to protect our nation against al-Qaeda and other terrorist groups.”
President Biden confirmed the news during an address to the American people on Monday night. Following al-Zawahiri’s death, all of the top plotters of the September 11 attacks have either died or been captured.
