Kaine Statement on Ceasefire Deal to Stop Fighting in Lebanon

WASHINGTON, D.C. –  Today, U.S. Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA), a member of the Senate Armed Services and Foreign Relations Committees, released the following statement regarding the ceasefire deal that was reached between Israel and Hezbollah to stop the fighting in Lebanon:

“I’m relieved that intense diplomatic engagement from the Biden Administration has finally led to a temporary ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah. The U.S. must now redouble efforts to make this ceasefire permanent and end the rapid escalation of violence that has destabilized the region and put Israeli and Lebanese people and humanitarian aid workers at grave risk. Now is also the time to take this progress to Gaza, and reach another agreement to stop the bloodshed and suffering, and secure the release of hostages held by Hamas. This is the only path to a sustainable peace—the best interest of civilians and U.S. servicemembers throughout the region.”

Kaine has repeatedly expressed his concern about the escalation of violence in Lebanon, including the deaths and displacement of civilians and attacks on United Nations peacekeepers and Lebanese Armed Forces members.
