WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Tim Kaine released the following statement today in commemoration of Belarus’s Freedom Day and in solidarity with Belarusian demonstrators:
“103 years ago, the people of Belarus exercised their fundamental right to self-governance and declared the establishment of a free and independent Belarusian National Republic. Today, I join Belarusians all around the world in commemorating Freedom Day and express my support for their ongoing effort to bring real democracy and respect for human rights to their country. I was proud to help introduce a resolution last year that condemned the crackdown on peaceful protestors in Belarus by the Lukashenka regime following the fraudulent presidential election. In December, Congress provided the President with additional tools to support the people of Belarus in their demands for free and fair elections through the Belarus Democracy, Human Rights, and Sovereignty Act. I urge the Biden administration to use these new capabilities to help the people of Belarus gain the freedoms they deserve.”
