Kaine Applauds Senate Passage of Social Security Fairness Act

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA) applauded the Senate passage of the Social Security Fairness Act, bipartisan legislation he cosponsored to strengthen Social Security benefits by eliminating the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO).

“Virginia’s firefighters, police officers, and other dedicated public servants deserve the full Social Security benefits they’ve earned,” said Kaine. “I’m glad to have cosponsored and voted for this legislation to help deliver on that principle, and encourage President Biden to sign it into law as quickly as possible.”

The Social Security Fairness Act will enhance retirement benefits for more than 50,000 Virginians, primarily those who worked for state and local government, whose benefits were unfairly reduced by the WEP and GPO provisions.

Companion legislation is led in the U.S. House of Representatives by Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger (D-VA-07).
