WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Tim Kaine released the following statement regarding President Biden’s bestowal of a Presidential Citizens Medal upon Evan Wolfson, the founder and president of the Freedom to Marry campaign that successfully secured marriage equality rights for same-sex couples:
“I congratulate my longtime friend Evan Wolfson upon his receipt of the Presidential Citizens Medal. We were writing research papers during our last year in law school—the Spring of 1983. Evan told me his paper was about the legal case for marriage equality. He’s devoted his entire life to the cause and, in doing so, helped our country move closer to the perfect ideal of equality for all. I’ve advocated for him receiving this award for nearly 10 years and am so glad that President Biden recognized Evan with this well-deserved honor.”
In 2019, Kaine and Wolfson penned an op-ed that ran in The Virginian-Pilot to emphasize the importance of marriage equality to realizing Thomas Jefferson’s vision of a country where all men are created equal.
