WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee (SFRC), and Senator Tim Kaine (D-Va.), Chair of the SFRC Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, issued a statement after Claudia Sheinbaum was declared the winner of the presidential election in Mexico, making her the first woman to be elected president in Mexico’s history.
“The election of Claudia Sheinbaum as Mexico’s first woman President is a historic occasion, and we commend the people of Mexico – including the Mexican nationals living across the United States – for their participation in the democratic process. Our shared 2,000 mile border and deep cultural, security, and economic ties have made Mexico one of the United States’ most important partners in the world for over 200 years. We look forward to working closely with President-elect Sheinbaum to further strengthen this partnership and work through our most urgent challenges, including growing cartel violence, illicit fentanyl trafficking by Mexican cartel groups, U.S. arms trafficking to Mexico, and upholding human rights and the rule of law in Mexico and across the Western Hemisphere.”
