Virginia Senator Voices his Opinion on Syria

Secretary of State John Kerry met with the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, asking them to support President Obama's plan to use military force against Syria. On that committee, Virginia Senator Tim Kaine.

"The use of chemical weapons violates American law and International law and it's gotta have a consequence,” said Kaine.

Senator Kaine said if the United States doesn't act, the use of chemical weapons in Syria will continue.

"It will happen again by Assad but it could encourage others who have these chemical weapons to use them as well. We have to make sure there is a consequence to know that people aren't going to get away with it," said Kaine.

Senator Kaine said the U.S. needs to have its eyes set on Russia. He said that country is blocking international action against Syria.

"Once Russia that they are going to support the principle of no use of chemical weapons against civilians, it is much more likely that Syria will come to a table to try and negotiate an end to the civil war," said Kaine.

Senator Kaine said he thinks congress will rally and support President Obama.

"I can't imagine that we will suddenly decide that the use of chemical weapons against civilians is suddenly OK. So I think the United States and other countries will act in concert to deter it from happening again," said Kaine.

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee will continue its talks Wednesday. Senators will be in a confidential meeting. Senator Kaine said there will be a vote next week.
