A roundtable discussion played host to personal stories being delivered, as well as remarks from Virginia Senator Tim Kaine.
An influential program, named Re-Engagement Opportunities and Pathways to Employment Success, supports those in recovery.
Reintegrating those with substance abuse history into society is an important goal for Senator Kaine.
“The fact that they have a criminal record can get in their way of what we do at the federal level, what can we do at the state level to enable people who really know this to help others find a path to recovery,” said Senator Kaine.
Attendees at the discussion, from the R.O.P.E.S program to the Tazewell Probation Office had the chance to speak and share their experiences.
R.O.P.E.S participants spoke on their first-hand accounts of substance abuse all the way to recovery through the program.
Senator Kaine said that these stories are what help motivate the people in office to continue their hard work.
“It’s 1,000% better to come and actually hear from people. Because now I go back, I’m on the health committee. I go back armed with good stories. Here’s a program that works as I’m talking to my colleagues,” said Kaine.
U.S. Senators Tim Kaine and Jim Banks both worked hand in hand on the PEER Act, and hope to increase the more positive stories of recovery from programs like this.
