Sen. Tim Kaine tours new research facility

U.S. Senator Tim Kaine, D-VA, donned a hardhat Friday morning for a glimpse of the latest in wireless, engineering and nuclear technologies tucked into a world-class facility in northeastern Bedford County.

Kaine toured the Center for Advanced Engineering and Research (CAER), a facility leading research and development activities for the power generation industry. Developed within Virginia’s Regional 2000 partnership, a network of organizations charged with providing regional economic development within 2,000 square miles in Virginia, CAER is an industry specific research and development center formed to bridge the gap between industry, university scholarship and federal research, specifically wireless communication and nuclear power.

“The region already is a leader in nuclear energy research and manufacturing,” Kaine said. “The center offers us the ability to accelerate that leadership for the benefit of the nation and the Lynchburg area economy. I applaud the five local governments in the region who have partnered with the center and pledge to do what I can to convince that the foolish sequester, which reduces Department of Defense and Department of Energy funding for energy research, should be replaced.”
