Sen. Tim Kaine Meets with E&H Students

Since the founding of the nation, presidents have gradually usurped the power to declare war from Congress, which has increasingly shown a desire to give up that power rather than make tough choices about war, according to Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine, who spoke recently to Emory & Henry College students.

Kaine, who stopped at the College, while visiting other locations in southwest Virginia, is working with Arizona Sen. John McCain on legislation that would seek a stronger definition of war in the new age of cyber attacks and drone strikes and would give more power to Congress in the declaration of war.

The legislation strives to establish “a consultative norm to make sure that the harder decisions are made more orderly,” Kaine said.

Kaine spoke to a gathering of E&H graduates students as well as undergraduates studying political sciences and public policy and community service. He was welcomed to campus by E&H President Jake B. Schrum.

During his visit, Kaine answered questions about military intervention, campaign finance, gun control and the economy.
