Sen. Kaine cosponsors legislation to help end homelessness among veterans

Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA) announced on Friday his co-sponsorship of legislation to help end homelessness among veterans in the United States.

Kaine, who was formerly a fair housing lawyer, stated the legislation, called the Housing for All Veterans Act, would allow veterans access to a housing voucher in the hopes of protecting veteran families from facing housing discrimination.

“Our servicemembers make countless sacrifices to protect our nation, and they deserve our support as they reenter civilian life,” Kaine said. “For many veterans, that support must include help overcoming housing insecurity and homelessness. I’m proud to cosponsor the Housing for All Veterans Act, which would help ensure that those who have served have a safe place to call home. I will continue to do all that I can to support our veterans.”

According to the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, since the introduction of the first-ever strategic plan to prevent veteran homelessness in 2010, the estimated number of veterans in the country experiencing homelessness has decreased by over 50%.

The Housing for All Veterans Act would include the following:

  • Provide housing vouchers to all low-income veteran households.
  • Assist public housing authorities in electronically verifying veteran status and lease rental units.
  • Protect veteran families from discrimination based on using a voucher.
  • Maximize access to vouchers by excluding veteran disability benefits from income eligibility calculations.

In the month of April, Kaine also cosponsored the Veterans Housing Stability Act of 2024, which helps veterans and active servicemembers get mortgage payments back on track.
