Virginia Senator Tim Kaine’s resolution blocking President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Canada passed through the Senate Wednesday night after four Republicans jumped to side with the Democrats in the final vote.
SJ-37 was first introduced in March, and Kaine took the floor yesterday prior to the final vote. He says after yesterday’s success in the Senate, they don’t plan to slow down.
“This chaos is wrecking the world’s strongest economy. In addition to challenging the president on the Canadian tariffs last night, we are now looking at the orders of the tariffs he imposed yesterday. And stay tuned, because we are going to file more challenges," Kaine said.
And now other senators are meeting in the middle for a new bipartisan bill that would give Congress final approval on tariffs imposed by a president.
Kaine says there should be a checks and balances system when it comes to trade.
“I think the President’s really wildly random actions on tariffs demonstrate that having some congressional oversight and restoring it to the way it was originally intended, is a good idea and I strongly support their position,” Kaine said.
Kaine says that the President has already claimed that he would veto the resolutions if they reached his desk, but Kaine says his focus on getting it through the House first.
