Kaine, Warner speak on threat of ISIS

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Both Virginia Senators were in Hampton Roads on Thursday.

10 On Your Side was there when Tim Kaine and Mark Warner spoke at the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce Forum in downtown Norfolk. They talked a lot about how the decisions being made in Washington, D.C. have a direct impact on our local economy.

After the event, the senators talked to WAVY.com about the events in Syria and Iraq.

“A crisp definition of the mission by the president and the administration is really what’s important,” Kaine said. “That gives us the tools we need task tough questions. Even when the President came last year to Congress on Syria, he had to define it, but then we narrowed it even further within the Formulations Committee. It’s that back-and-forth process that gets Congress involved, but also educates the American public.

“I also think we need the Iraqis to stand up, truly a government that is representative of all people,” Warner said. “We can only do so much. They need to pull their weight, as well as other regimes in the region. ISIS is a threat to not only to Iraq, but to other regimes, as well.”

Senator Warner is up for re-election this year.
