Kaine vows to fight for education as he discusses Department of Education's future impact

U.S. Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia was in Damascus checking on Helene recovery efforts on Friday. News 5 spoke with him about President Trump's executive order to eliminate the Department of Education.

Kaine is a member of the Senate health, education, labor and pensions committee, also known as HELP.

According to a press release statement, Kaine said the order will have negative impacts on every student and will harm the economic growth of our nation.

He said he will fight to make sure every student can continue the high quality education they deserve.

I think it’s a bad idea I really do and I think it’s gonna be interesting to see the way the senate reacts to that. I'm on the education committee in the senate and all the committees are majority republican obviously because there’s a republican majority in the senate, but I don’t think all my republican colleagues on that committee are in support of this move, so that will be a significant point of discussion, it’s called the HELP committee health, education, labor and pensions I know this is gonna be a significant point of conversation as soon as we get back Monday, said U.S. Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia.

Meanwhile, Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin has praised the President for the order, saying he welcomes the change.
