ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va (WVIR) -
The Boys & Girls Club has officially opened a new facility for children in Albemarle, Buckingham, and Fluvanna counties in the Old Scottsville School building.
The James River Club celebrated the grand opening of its new space Saturday, though programs, such as cooking classes, started earlier this summer.
"All of these people are here to show the kids that they support them, and their future, so we're really excited about that,” said James Pierce, director of the Central Virginia Boys & Girls Club.
The Old Scottsville School has been remodeled. It has a gym, multi-purpose cafeteria, and a “tech room” full of computers for the kids to do homework after school.
"The things the Boys & Girls Club do really help children become successful and I've already talked to some of the children who have been engaged in programs here and they're big fans,” said Senator Tim Kaine, who attended the grand opening.
The Scottsville location is the sixth Boys & Girls Club to open in central Virginia, giving kids a safe and productive place to spend their time in southern Albemarle County.
"It just gets these kids started in a good way that they can follow for the rest of their lives,” Kaine said.
The Boys & Girls Club is open to any child between the ages of 6 and 18. It costs $35 for the entire year, which includes summer programs and activities.
